Mahua is a boutique floral and gifting studio in Mahim, Mumbai. We make fresh, thoughtful flower arrangements and gifts — hand-packed at our studio, hand-delivered to your door, and free of plastic and floral foam. Started by two sisters who grew up around flowers, Mahua is still run the same way it started: with care, without shortcuts.

Our Story
Mahua began with a simple idea: make flower gifting feel the way flowers actually feel. Generous. Natural. A little unexpected.
What was out there — heavy non-biodegradable packaging, fewer flowers, more decoration — didn’t sit right. We wanted less fuss and more blooms.
The seeds go further back than the business, though. Our mother grew up in a large bungalow in Allahabad, with a garden that was always full of something in flower. When the family moved to a Mumbai flat, she missed it. So every Friday, she’d come home with fresh flowers. Nothing elaborate — just stems, a vase, and the way they changed the whole room.
We noticed it as kids. How something that small could make a space feel completely different. How you’d walk in and the week would feel lighter.
That stayed with us. Over time the instinct became intentional. Flowers aren’t just decoration — they’re a way of saying something. Happy birthday. I’m thinking of you. Congratulations. Thank you. Sometimes a bunch of sunflowers lands better than any card could.
The more we worked with flowers, the more we saw what the industry was doing wrong. Plastic everywhere. Floral foam that never biodegrades. Packaging so elaborate it buried the blooms. We wanted to strip all of that back.
Choosing eco-friendly
This wasn’t a trend we caught. It was a problem we couldn’t ignore.
Floral foam — the green sponge most florists use — is a petroleum-based product. It doesn’t biodegrade. It can’t be recycled. It releases microplastics when it breaks down. And it goes in the bin the moment the flowers are unwrapped.
We haven’t used it once. Every arrangement at Mahua is made with natural techniques, and every element around the flowers is either recyclable, biodegradable, or made to be kept and reused. The jute twine. The paper wrapping. The vases and tins. Even the flowers themselves — they can be dried, pressed, or composted.
As the studio grew, the same thinking moved into gifting. Handwoven leaf baskets that are made to be filled again. Packaging that doesn’t embarrass you when you throw it away.
It’s still what every decision at Mahua comes back to: does this work for the flowers, and does it work for the planet?

Pooja and Sonali — The Two Sisters Behind Mahua
Meet the founders
Mahua is a family business in the most literal sense. Founded by sisters Pooja Mehrotra and Sonali Thakkar, the studio grew out of a shared childhood and a shared sensibility — that flowers should be simple, seasonal, and as close to nature as possible.
Pooja looks after the creative and business side of the studio. Sonali handles the floristry and sourcing. Between them, they’ve built something that feels less like a brand and more like a point of view.
Neither of them trained at a flower school. They learned by doing — by sourcing, arranging, delivering, getting feedback, and going again. There’s a directness to the studio that probably comes from that. No layers. No middlemen. They pack the orders, they answer the WhatsApps, and they’re the ones who decided years ago that they’d never put a flower in foam.
The Allahabad garden, the Friday flowers, the Mumbai flat — that’s still the whole idea. Bring a little of that in. Every week. For someone.
